A foggy day at the ranch
I am a man, a husband, a father, and a grandfather. I am a retired neurologist with interest in behavior, a relatively new rancher, and a humanist. I retired from medicine and live at Medicine Spirit Ranch, our cattle ranch near Fredericksburg, Texas. Trudy, my wife of almost 44 years, and I enjoy our quaint German community. I love Border collies with rarely a day passing when I don’t stand in awe of their intelligence and athleticism. We travel, golf, and volunteer in our community.
We have lived, worked, and studied in Minneapolis, London, Moscow, as well as multiple locations throughout Texas. These experiences, no doubt, influence my descriptions and beliefs.
Much of my earlier works were scientific, medical, and advice for persons suffering from or caring for those with neurological disorders. Now I aspire to write for popular audiences, especially describing the wisdom expressed in patient stories, the wonder of Border collies, and the enjoyment of retired life in the Texas Hill Country.

Dear Dr. Hutton,
I was a medical student at Texas Tech from 1987-1991. I remember distinctly a few lectures you gave us during our freshman year. You are such a great teacher and I’m ordering your book. Since I’m a surgeon I usually read surgeons books but I can’t wait to read yours. In my third year I didn’t get to rotate with you but I spent my time with Dr. Green and the resident Lon Barba. The reason I looked you up is because I’m going to be in Lubbock for a few days and I’m meeting one of my classmates who is a surgeon at Tech and unfortunately he has Parkinson’s Disease. I am a little confused about you however because I thought that a couple of years ago I read your obituary in the Austin paper. I hope the rumors of your passing have been greatly exaggerated!
